Einige freie Flächen - Mixed Media Installation 2001/2002

Einige freie Flächen untersucht verschiedene Aspekte von Leere, die Bedeutung von Leerstellen. Mich interessiert der Zusammenhang von Denken, Vorstellungen und Raum. Denken als Handlung und dessen räumlich/visuelle Bedingungen.

Die Ausstellung zeigt Raumansätze oder überhaupt nur mehr Flächen. Ausgangspunkte, lose Anzeichen. Die Installation besteht aus drei weißen und einer farbig lackierten Holzplatte in unterschiedlichen Größen und Formen. Die Fotos zeigen fehlerhafte, reduzierte Modelle und einige leere Räume. Es handelt sich um Auslassungen, die präsentiert werden, beziehungsweise Pausen.

Die Raumansätze konstituieren einen eigenen Ort, sind besetzbare Leerstelle. Als solche stellen sie einen idealen Platz für Handlung/Aktion dar. Sie umschreiben einen Ort, der einfach nur da ist, der nicht funktioniert. Er ist unbestimmt, verweist also auf keine offensichtliche Nutzung, suggeriert keine bestimmten Verhaltensweisen. Er beschreibt sein Fehlen.

Einige freie Flächen kann als notwendiges, nicht kontrolliertes, offenes Handlungsfeld gelesen werden, als diverse Anfänge. Das 'Sich-außerhalb-stellen' ist eine Weigerung, eine Irritation, aber auch der Wunsch zu verstehen, nach Aktion und ein potentielles Mittel für Veränderung, wie der Neuformierung der Umgebung. Reflexionsdistanz. Der mögliche Ausgangspunkt einer Position. Die Möglichkeit zu beginnen.

Installation: 3 weißbeschichteten Pressspanplatten 131x201cm (1 Schmalseite mit weißer Kante, die übrigen roh belassen), 118,4x110x212cm (1 Schmalseite (110) sowie 212 rechtwinkelige Seite mit weißer Kante, die übrigen roh belassen), 130x196cm (die beiden Schmalseiten und eine Längsseite mit weißer Kante, die Andere roh belassen). 1 MdF-Platte 84x178x181cm in der Farbe S1060-G50Y
semimatt lackiert. Alle Platten sind auf Holzböcken installiert.

The World Is Yours - Mixed Media Installation,

“Ich bin der Wiener Rathausmann
Schau mir die Stadt von oben an“

In 1985, for the design of the exhibition “Traum und Wirklichkeit”, Hans Hollein set up two models of Viennese icons on the top of the Künstlerhaus to play at the scale of the public space of Karlsplatz: a small-scale model of the Karl-Marx-Hof, and an enlarged plastic doll version of the Medizin of Klimt.

To find ways to feel the sense of belonging may be the problem of politics, urban design, trademarks or a family concern... Designing environments and events are strategies to provide this sense. These designs do not only modify the landscape locally. They possibly constitute narratives in ways to project familiar and evocative images to subject the user to a certain appropriation. But the mnemonic function of narratives can only be inscribed into the existing body of collective stories. Myths, like cognition, are not individual realities but social processes. The World Is Yours plays with abilities to eliminate conflicts between wished-for possible worlds and the world as it is. It creates a visual narrative fit to develop the idea of recognition through ludic attitudes.

Two automated light-projectors with moving mirror fixtures lay on the floor. Usually used for discotheques to respond linearly to the beats, they are here moving through a specially designed game engine. The program coerces the white spotlights to play together an ongoing game while revealing the ceiling. One light is pursuing the other, from time to time they are colliding in a randomly coloured event.
A wall is coated with an assemblage of hexagonal plastic modules. It provides an undeterminated abstract shape, in which one could see what she/he wants -a map, a cloud, a sheep …-. Yet white spray-paint is subtly modifying the shininess of some of the white hexagons. Depending on the position of the viewer, a face appears.
On the adjacent wall, a collage of images and texts refers to a Viennese context: a picture of Heinz Conrads, a radio and TV entertainer of the 70’s, in the costume of the Wiener Rathausmann, an extract of “Ich bin der Wiener Rathausmann” a song by Camillo Öhlberger, the title “Traum und Wirklichkeit” and a tiny identity photo of Lisa Holzer and David Jourdan made in an automate in a game hall, with Mickey Mouse ears and nose drawn on David’s head. Yet this is less to give explanations than to open up possibilities for associations, a visual consciousness.
